At Fundamental Siteworks, we provide artisanally designed small retaining walls for every terrain and purpose. A stone retaining wall holds back (or retains) the soil behind it. However, the pressure behind a given wall is immense, as it holds back tons of soil and water. Therefore, you want the professionals with years of experience to create your retaining wall so it remains structurally sound.
Even if a wall is well-constructed, it could be compromised over the years if the builder fails to create the proper outlet to deal with runoff. This thoughtful design ensures that the water pressure doesn’t build up and erode your wall’s foundation.
Creating a retaining wall of any size requires deep consideration and a highly detailed design. At Fundamental Siteworks, we have the professionals you need to build your bespoke structure. We are the home of residential stone retaining walls that are functional and aesthetically pleasing. We understand that you want to complete projects with an excellent combination of structure and beauty that will increase your property value.
At Fundamental Siteworks, we are experts at creating small retaining walls using various techniques to suit the terrain of your property. The different types of stone retaining walls include:
A gravity retaining wall uses its weight to resist lateral (or horizontal) earth pressure. They are perfect for a wall height of up to 3 meters. A gravity retaining wall has sufficient gravity load to counteract the soil’s eroding pressure. We offset these sliding, overturning, and bearing forces with solid stone and other masonry walls.
Crib retaining walls are a subset of gravity walls. They consist of interlocking, individual boxes manufactured from either wood or pre-cast concrete. We fill these boxes with crushed stones or other coarse-grained materials to make a strong wall with a sound draining system. Crib retaining walls are either timber retaining walls or reinforced concrete. These walls are suitable for your garden, but they are not ideal for slope support.
This wall type consists of multi-celled, rectangular-shaped wire mesh boxes. We then fill these boxes with rocks and other weighted materials. A gabion retaining wall is helpful for erosion control, particularly for stabilizing steep slopes.
A cantilever retaining wall is the most popular type of wall. It consists of two opposed slabs anchored into the base of a slope. This wall is made from precast concrete, reinforced concrete, or prestressed concrete to withstand soil pressure. We can create this wall onsite (the good news is that it uses less concrete) and backfill it. A cantilever retaining wall is perfect for a height of up to 10 meters.
A counter-fort or buttressed retaining wall is a subset of the cantilever model. However, this wall type has solid counter forts along the base of each slab that creates it. This wall type is suitable for wall heights ranging from 8 to 12 meters.
An anchored retaining wall is used when there’s limited space to install a wall (or where a thin retaining wall is needed). This wall type is perfect if your property has loose soil over rocks. We drive cable rods or wires at a horizontal angle deep into the earth. We then fill the ends with concrete to provide an anchor. These tiebacks serve as counterbalances against any sliding or overturning soil pressure.
We provide exceptional small retaining walls for every need. The terrain of your property presents no obstacle to us - we will find the right solution for you. Our residential stone retaining walls are not only strong, but they are beautiful works of art that will increase the value of your property.
