Stormwater Management Systems

Storms are inevitable, but they don’t need to damage your home. Instead, you can take steps to protect your property. Fundamental Siteworks are experts in designing and installing the best stormwater management systems. We will create the solutions you need that offer the requisite functionality and exceptional aesthetics to boost your property value.

The Impact of Stormwater on Your Property

There is increased stormwater after precipitation from rain, storms, or snow. It may consist of the runoff from your neighborhood streets, lawns, and any homes or facilities nearby. Flooding is one of America’s significant natural hazards, and it costs our communities an average of $9 billion annually in direct damages. If left unmanaged, this stormwater can flood your yard, the basement, and the ground floor of your property. You may also experience erosion of your landscape, and depending on the terrain, you could lose land due to this erosion.

Stormwater can also flow into surface water sources directly or through the soil system. Unfortunately, this intrusion brings pollution from motor oil, grease, metal particles, sediment, residual fertilizers and pesticides, and bacteria from animal waste.

Furthermore, even airborne pollutants can contaminate the stormwater runoff.

With Fundamental Siteworks, you can minimize the impact of stormwater on your property and the environment. We invite you to explore our stormwater management systems.

About Our Stormwater Management Systems

At Fundamental Siteworks, we offer a variety of stormwater management solutions:

Drainage Ditches

Swales and Site Grading

Swales and Site Grading

We will examine your property to determine the best placement of ditches to safeguard your assets. Each ditch is specially designed to collect and direct stormwater away from your home and critical assets.

Drainage ditches work best with gravity. Therefore, we position open ditches at the head of the natural slopes to intercept and reduce surface water flow in your yard.

Fundamental Siteworks specializes in various ditches that may be either V-shaped, U-shaped, trapezoidal, or semi-circular in shape. We will assess the expected runoff in different areas of your property, and so the dimensions of these drains will vary.

Swales and Site Grading

Swales and Site Grading

A swale is a narrow trench that we create along your property’s contour. Then, we place a berm (or a raised bank) on the downhill side with the soil we extract from the trench. The swale captures stormwater runoff and slowly spreads it along the contour line to gradually seep into the ground and not flood your property.

Site grading is another method we use to level your property and angle its contours. These measures reduce the pace and volume of runoff that occurs.

Learn more about one of our stormwater management systems: natural filtration.

Natural Filtration System

A natural filtration system is another stormwater management tool. We have several options to treat residential stormwater runoff:

  • Surface sand filter: We use a flow splitter to disperse the runoff into a sedimentation chamber. At this point, the sand filters the pollutants before the water seeps underground.
  • Underground sand filter: This method works best when you have limited space. We place the sand filter in an underground vault, and the runoff enters via manholes and grates. The filtered runoff then seeps away into the soil.
  • Vegetative filter: These filters use plant structures to facilitate the removal of sediment, nutrients, and pollutants.
  • Organic filter: This filter works like a surface sand filter. The only difference is that, instead of sand, we use leaf compost or a peat-and-sand mixture to filter the stormwater runoff.
  • Pocket filter: This type of filter is a less expensive variation of the sand filter, except that it uses a grass filter and a plunge pool. The filter bed consists of a shallow basin with a sand, soil, and grass filtration system. The filtered runoff then enters the plunge pool before it drains into the ground.
  • Submerged gravel wetland: This filtration method comprises a set of cells with gravel (or crushed rock). The pipe leading into each cell is angled to feed the stormwater runoff into them. We also incorporate the roots of wetland plants into the system to serve as a further filter. This process helps to treat the runoff before it seeps into the soil sufficiently.

Stormwater Management Systems: Detention and Retention Basins

Fundamental Siteworks can also install detention and retention basins. A detention basin (or detention pool) is a manufactured depression in your yard that collects and stores the stormwater runoff. These detention basins are also known as wet basins as they form permanent ponds.

Alternatively, a retention basin is also a manufactured depression, but it functions differently. A retention basin collects and gradually releases the stormwater in a safe manner. This type of stormwater management structure does not hold water in a permanent pool. A retention basin is also called a dry basin (for example, a rain garden).

Our stoneworks are high-quality, artisanal pieces to help our clients make these stormwater management systems attractive backyard features.
